98 Honda Accord Valve cover, oil leak, need help!?

Recently I had an oil change done on my 98 accord 4 cyl V-Tech engine. It appears some couple months later I have an oil leak. It appears not all the bolts that hold down the valve cover gasket are there? Does anyone know how many bolts hold down the gasket and where they are located? Or is there a web site that might show me a design? Sure looks to me like at least 1 bolt on right side (facing engine) of valve cover gasket is missing. It's threaded and no bolt is there, this is also the side where oil seems to be dripping. FYI: Valve cover gasket was changed within last year. Car has been maintained exceptionally well since it was new. Any help is greatly appreciated.98 Honda Accord Valve cover, oil leak, need help!?here it is

How difficult is it to replace a Valve Cover Gasket?

I am a novice. I have very little experience. I have changed the brakes before, but that's the most work I've done on a car. Would this be a difficult task. If you were to rate it from 1 to 10, 1 being the least difficult adn 10 being the most, what would you rate it, and explain a little on why you feel that way. I need as much info as possible, thanksHow difficult is it to replace a Valve Cover Gasket?well depending on the car it can be very easy or very hard. if its in the open and easy to get to you can do it easy. just remove the old clean the surface and bolt it back. make sure to look up the specs an torque to the correct amountHow difficult is it to replace a Valve Cover Gasket?you said you changed brakes before? well valve pan gaskets are easier but it also depends on what car your changing them on too. now my 88 oldsmobile i had to remove the plug wires, remove the egr valve and pull the power steering pump back but you might not have to do all that.

Where could these valve cover & spark plug leaks be coming from? 2001 Honda Civic LX?

okay, so i changed my valve cover gasket twice, first time i pinched the spark plug seals in the valve cover and over tightened the valve cover causing a small leak on the side. this time i did it all correctly, but there is oil leaking outside the valve cover coming from the 4th spark plug cylinder. what could this be? i never changed the gasket/seal on the spark plug tube. i didn't know how to get it off, i only changed the spark plug seals under the valve cover. can someone please help me with this? new mechanic in the works, thanks in advanced for all the help.Where could these valve cover %26amp; spark plug leaks be coming from? 2001 Honda Civic LX?Replace the rubber/steel washer grommets (all of them) under the cover attaching nuts.

These get hard and brittle after awhile and won't exert enough pressure to hold the cover down tightly.

Congrats on your new mechanical ventures, much of it is just plain common sense.Where could these valve cover %26amp; spark plug leaks be coming from? 2001 Honda Civic LX?You MUST use RTV, otherwise it will most likely leak. If it leaks agian, get 4 plug seals, and the valve cover gasket, run a bead of hi temp RTV around the corners and where it is most likely to leak, torque the valve cover down to the factory specs and you wont have a leak.

How do I get to the rear valve cover gasket on my 2001 Impala, 3.8L V6?

I changed the front one no problem, it was easy to get to. But the rear valve cover is tucked away in the back near the firewall, it almost looks like I have to tilt the engine forward somehow...I can remove the ront sway bar and that will help but it is still a VERY VERY tight fit. Any ideas on how I can get to it?How do I get to the rear valve cover gasket on my 2001 Impala, 3.8L V6?Although rotating the engine is recommended for changing the spark plugs on some engine/chassis combinations (not this one), it's not specified for this job on this car. Basically, just a matter of taking stuff out of the way as needed.

    Right Side (Rear)

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2. Remove the accessory drive belt.

    3. Remove the alternator and the alternator brackets.

    5. Tag for identification and remove the vacuum hoses from the evaporative canister purge solenoid valve.

    6. Remove the evaporative canister purge solenoid valve and the AIR check valve/pipe.

    7. Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils in place.

    8. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the right rocker arm cover.

  • How much would it cost to replace Valve Cover Gasket replacement in Nissan Altima 2000?

My nissan altima 2000 needs valve cover gasket replaced.

When i recently changed my oil the service personnel told it would cost $125 and 1 hour of work.

When I called back to check the price of labor, another service personnel answered and told its a 7 hour work so it would cost around $625. I am not sure whats going on.

Any one know what is valve cover gasket and how much it would actually cost to replace it?How much would it cost to replace Valve Cover Gasket replacement in Nissan Altima 2000?Valve gasket is about 1 to 1.5 hrs to replace. Its right on top, under your valve cover (where your spark plugs go in, next to it). The gasket itself can range from $5 -$35. Normally only takes a few wreches to under 4 bolts and to remove a few other items. Removing of the gasket, cleaning of the area, new gasket installed, put back together.

Sounds like the 7 hr quote might of been for an intake manifold gasket maybe. How much would it cost to replace Valve Cover Gasket replacement in Nissan Altima 2000?The part itself is less than $100. It's a little rubber gasket that goes inbetween the valve cover and the engine block to make a tight seal between the middle and top of the engine. Depending on which engine you have (the 4 or the V-6), it can be a VERY simple fix with about an hour's labor because the valve cover is on top. However, some (very few) cars require you to remove the motor to get to the cover. If this is the case, 7 hours seems about right. How much would it cost to replace Valve Cover Gasket replacement in Nissan Altima 2000?I found a Valve Cover gasket on advanceautoparts.com, for $34.94. They are not hard to change and should not cost more than $100.00 to buy a new one and have it replaced unless the mechanic doing it is really hard up for cash. How much would it cost to replace Valve Cover Gasket replacement in Nissan Altima 2000?It really depends if you have the 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder vehicle. Which you failed to mention.

The 4 cylinder Altima, the $125 sounds about right. (there is only one valve cover gasket)

For the 6 cylinder, the transverse mounted, it depends on which valve cover gasket they are replacing. There is two and one is much easier to get to than the other. How much would it cost to replace Valve Cover Gasket replacement in Nissan Altima 2000?It dosen't matter what model Altima you have they all came with the 4 cylinder, so the labor time is .4 hours and the gasket costs $12.00 according to Alldata. Which is what most shops use for their labor times. Sounds to me like the shop you talked to was trying to take you for a ride.

2001 Chevy S10: Replacing both intake manifold and valve cover gasket?

    Hello,

My engine is a V6 4.3L about 180,000 miles. The coolant is leaking from the intake manifold gasket, so my mechanic told me to change it. Now, he tells me I should change ALSO the valve cover gasket. Is it easy to change the valve cover gasket while changing the intake manifold gasket?

How much additional money should I expect to pay?

Should I just have to pay the cost of the valve cover gasket? Or also some labor cost to putting in?

About how much more labor to put it in?

If I don't change the valve cover gasket now, about how much much will it cost to change in the future? I'm not loosing much oil. It is seeping a bit, I think. I don't mind checking the oil and refilling if needed (good or bad idea?). Please advice. Thank you!2001 Chevy S10: Replacing both intake manifold and valve cover gasket?Personally, I would also change the valve cover gaskets at the same time. It shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks for the gaskets. In order to change the valve cover gaskets, its only 12 more bolts. They take the bolts out, slide the covers off, scrape (if necessary) the old gaskets, put the new ones one, and put the covers back on and put the bolts back in. It is really simple to do. I've done a few of them helping my dad in the garage.

Changing a valve cover gasket (2000 dodge stratus)?

How hard is it to change a valve cover gasket on a 3.0 doch. Its a stratus, I looked anb the distributor is up there does it come out too? please help cant afford $70. or $90. an hour need to do my self. I have some no how.Changing a valve cover gasket (2000 dodge stratus)?im not familiar with this particular engine but you might have 2 disconnect a few cables or wires and of course the air filter housing. be very care full when taking the bolts out since everything is ALUMINIUM when you remove the cover this is the best time 2 really clean the top and inside of the cover. if the outside of the case is a little rusty take some fine sandpaper and remove the rust. take a scrapper and gently take off the oldgasket on the cover and on the surface on the engine. get a gasket if available and a tube of blue silicone. i always put silicone on the gasket that will keep the gasket in place. make sure all the bolt holes line up. put the top on and put put the bolts on in a criss cross system so the top will tighten evenly. do not overtighten or the bolts will snap. usually snug the bolts and then give them a 1/8th turn. put everything back and check 4 any leaks. check a few days later for leaks and if there is give the bolts another 1/8th turn. i hope this helps you good luck mike.Changing a valve cover gasket (2000 dodge stratus)?it shouldn't be Very hard to replace it you might have to disconnect a few other parts, but it should be pretty easy to replace. There are probably only about 8 to 10 bolts holding the cover on. The only thing you really need to know when putting it back together is the torque specifications because if you do not get that right you could crack the cover, and it could leak.

How much would it be to change the valve cover gaskets for a nissan 300zx?

i have leaking valve cover gaskets and want to know how much to repair itHow much would it be to change the valve cover gaskets for a nissan 300zx?Very little if you do it yourself. GET THIS!!! Chances are that you will only have to re-tighten your cover bolts. WORST case SCENARIO, is remove cover and CLEAN the gaskets. They are re-usable in most cases. Leaks like this are caused many times from the lengthy use of conventional oil rather than synthetic. Sludge builds up inside the cover and allows things to leak. Good luck!!

Just do the gasket if it is bothering you, or very bad.How much should it cost to change a VW valve cover gasket and sparks plug? You should never wait to change a part if you have an oil leak!!!!!!!!!! Fix it now and save yourself the headache. Plus that price sounds very reasonable to me. As for the Spark Plugs - they are one of the easiest jobs to do.

Get a plug socket (all auto places have them in stock) the plugs are cheap, sometimes less than 10 ($20 although the States tends to have cheaper parts than the UK so it may be cheaper than that)

Get the old ones out, carefully centre the new ones and screw them in to the instructions on the box and replaced the HT leads.

:~}How much should it cost to change a VW valve cover gasket and sparks plug? The valve cover gasket is about $20 and the plugs are about $1.50 each. Just do it yourself and save some money. Buy a book from an auto parts store and follow the step by step directions. It is super easy. How much should it cost to change a VW valve cover gasket and sparks plug?Spark plugs with 3k use do not need to be changed. If the valve cover gasket is not leaking, it does not have to be changed either. Someone needs to find out where the oil leak is, not change gaskets until they find the correct one. All it may need is for the bolts to be snugged up a little (5 to 8 minutes worth of labor).

There will be six bolts near the center of the engine to remove them, and then you have to be careful of the intake tubing, vacuum lines, and some connectors they may have attached to that as well. Also, the throttle cable is there too. Is a pain, but can be done. May want to get a new gasket for that upper intake piece, as most likley it'll tear on you when removing that piece. Hope this helps some.I am trying to change my valve cover gasket on a v6 3.8 1992 thunderbird. i need to move the fillem i think? You are only trying to change one? If it is a V6 then there is 2 covers, one on each side they should look almost identical with the exception of writing on top of them. Usually there is only 4 bolts holding the cover on and they should be clearly visible when looking directly at cover. I don't want to lead you down the wrong path, because I am not looking at the car, so if you insist on doing this yourself I recommend you go to the nearest autoparts house and purchase the Hanes manual for your particular make and model car it will have pictures and step by step instructions on how to replace the valve cover gasket.

Any one know how to change a valve cover gasket on a 2000 Daewoo leganza?

If it is just the valve cover it easy. Once you have the valve cover off the car clean it up with degreaser (Purple Power) Make sure you clean all of the old gasket from the valve cover. Get the gasket silicone from the part store, just tell them you need gasket silicone I think it is orange.

Line the outside lip of the valve cover with the silicone so that when it pressed up against the engine it spreads out, bolt it down and wait about 2-3 hours to let seal.

    Things you'll need:

    1) Gasket set.

    2) Small putty knife, or scraper. (to remove old gasket material)

    3) Spray cleaner. (to clean the oil off everything)

4)%26quot;High-tack%26quot; or %26quot;copper coat%26quot;, spray on gasket adhesive. (to hold the gasket in place durring assembly)

    5) Small socket set. (to remove the bolts)

    6) small stiff wire brush (handy to have for the small gasket pieces stuck to valve covers)

    7) A roll of paper towels. (just a good idea)

Remove the air cleaner and housing. (completely)

    Remove the valve cover bolts.

Remove the valve covers. Sometimes they can get stuck to the head from years of heat and pressure and don't like to come off easily.

Clean all the hard, crusty gasket material from both surfaces.

Clean ALL the oil from the rim of the valve covers.

Place your gaskets on the box they came in with the side that goes to the valve cover facing up.

Spray the valve cover mating surface, and the gaskets with spray adhesive. (let it dry 10 minutes or so untill it's tacky)

Place the gaskets on the valve covers.

Reassemble. Don't over tighten the bolts on the valve covers.

They should be pretty snug, not real tight.

Some people recommend using silicone adhesive. Ignore them.

T-stat too? NOT JUST THE GASKET.

Drain most of your coolant into a bucket.

Remove upper radiator hose from the engine. (Some times they like to stick)

    Remove the two bolts.

    Scrape the old gasket off.

Use that brand new wire brush you bought to clean off the old gasket and corrosion

Install thermostat (heavy end down), install gasket, reassemble, and refill. How hard is it to change valve cover gasket on a 1986 ford bronco w/ fuel injection?all mr know it said...but the hard part is getting to the covers...go slow tske notes, put tags on parts as removed, take pictures of where things go..get some coffee cans for nuts%26amp; bolts.. Its not the easiest task if you have never tried it before. I would suggest being very careful and numbering your spark plugs, plug wires, and even your bolts so you know the exact order. When you get the part you should inquire about any extra parts or supplies you may need such as RTV silicon sealant.

I have a 93 ford ranger 4.0 v6 5 speed 4wheeldrive...i noticed when you drive it for a short period of time and get out smoke just rolls out from underneath the hood and you open it up and you can see oil just oozing out from the valve covers...just wondering if that was what is wrong with the oil leakageHow to change valve cover gaskets on a 93 ford ranger 4.0?Yep, I'd say that's your problem. To change them you'll need to go buy a valve cover gasket and some blue glue. Unbolt the valve covers, scrape of the old gasket with a screwdriver, clean up the cover good before putting the blue glue down on it. place your new gasket on. makes sure its right, you don't want your bolts to break the new gasket when you screw them back and don't over tighten the bolts. To be sure you should use a torque wrench. If you don't have one tighten it snug and go about a quarter turn more. Clean the oil that's already spilled on your motor also, or it'll continue to smoke and smell until it burns the oil off. I have a 93 Geo Tracker and I need to know around what it would cost to get it fixed at a shop. I know the part is like 10 bucks...Thanks How much would it be to change a valve cover gasket at a shop?Figure about $100, maybe a bit less. I'm not familiar withthe Tracker, but many cars have a lot of junk covering the valve cover(s) which must be removed and reinstalled to do the job. You need to be careful when this is done. Get any debris in the valve gear area when the cover is off and you can toast the engine with damage to the cam etc.

More than basic tools are also probably required, Most valve covers have a torque spec for installation. This seats the gasket. Overtighten and you get a leak, undertighten and you get a leak.

Anyone have a diagram on how to change a valve cover gasket....??

I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX. It's 16 valve and it's a 4 cylinder. I have seen this procedure done but it's been a long time. Can someone give me either a diagram or directions on how to replace the valve cover gasket. Also should I replace the sparks plugs as well? Thank you very much!!!Anyone have a diagram on how to change a valve cover gasket....??Valve cover gasket is an easy task... simply disconnect anything mounted to the top... unbolt it (outside diameter of cover) and pull it off (be careful as not to bend the lip). Replace the gasket (make sure both mating sides are clean)... and reinstall the bolt starting in the middle on each side, working your way around. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the bolts... that is a common mistake. Reconnect anything you pulled off... and test it out.

Replacing spark plug is never a bad idea... especially if they have many miles on them.

    - Good Luck!Anyone have a diagram on how to change a valve cover gasket....??Remember that the cover is just thin metal, with only the rubber gasket underneath it, so tighten gently or you will bend it. It will leak from then on...The manual should have the torque--it will be small, probably in in. lbs., 12 in. lbs. makes 1 ft. lb.

I'm not a mechanic at all, my 1986 ford bronco has FUEL INJECTION and I need to change the valve cover gasket and the thermostat gasket . And I want to do this myself....Please help! I mean I don't even change the oil, I just put gas and go.1986 Ford Bronco how do you change the valve cover gasket and the thermostat gasket when it has fuel injectionChanging the valve cover and thermostat housing gaskets is not affected by the engine being fuel injected, other than the location of certain things on the engine that may have to be removed to gain access to valve covers, but understand the gaskets are gaskets regardless of the type of fuel system on the vehicle.

Actually changing the gaskets is not tough at all, however removing various things from the engine to actually get to the valve covers is a rather ambitious project for a novice

My suggestion would be either buy or go down to the library and find a service manual for your Bronco and read through the sections on removing/reinstalling the valve covers and thermostat and that will give you a better understanding of what all is involved, and that should better help you decide if you can tackle this project.

I'm not saying that to discourage you - I'm all in favor of the do-it-yourselfer, but I don't want to falsely lead you to think this is a simple no brainer for a novice...1986 Ford Bronco how do you change the valve cover gasket and the thermostat gasket when it has fuel injectionThe fuel injection system is comprised of many different piece or sub-systems. I've done valve cover gasket replacements for Hondas and Acuras but the Toyota V6 engine is a bit different. Can someone give me info on how to change a valve cover gasket for a '02 Toyota Camry V6?First, get your hands on a repair manual. Don't remove anything you don't need to. The seals are like o-rings and press into the covers. Put RTV on the cam seals. Be sure and clean the groove where the cover seal inserts and get rid of any dirt and oil, or it will leak. The cover bolt torque is probably slight- look it up to make sure- probably 14 ft.Lbs. Thet back cover- Hmmm. I'll pray for you. It's not impossible, but take your time and keep everything clean. Follow the book.

To be honest, I stopped paying attention to the cost and now just have the oil filter changed and keep oil in the car trunk, for all the oil that leaks from it.

It'd be far easier to replace the entire car...

(sigh) If only I could afford it!

There is almost nothing to replacing a valve cover gasket. How much will it cost to change valve cover gasket?Changing it yourself would be the most economical. The gasket probably costs around 10-25 bucks.

If you have a mechanic change it it can run from 1-2 hours labor depending how much is in the way of the valve cover. Most shops in my area charge from 65-85 an hour shop rate plus parts.
