Fan clutch blowed up?

I have a 1990 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed(it turns as sharp as a freight train) with the stock fuel injected 351w. About a month ago it stalled, I re-cranked it and there was a whole series of bad sounds under the hood. I turned the key off immediately and pulled it back into my driveway with a chain.

From what I can tell it looks like the fan clutch literally exploded and a piece of it shot through the water pump and into the timing cover.

Its probably a good thing it happened because the water pump was probably about due to be changed and as I got in there I realized the timing chain was worn, and since a piece of fan clutch dropped into the oil pan I had to pull the oil pan which needed a new gasket. Had to pull the plenum to get the motor high enough to change the oil pan gasket so i needed a new plenum gasket too. Also realized it was time for motor mounts and valve cover gaskets and complete tune-up. Anyways the truck is back together and runs great and sounds great... well it sounds great everywhere except from the driver seat. lol the tailpipes are about 20 feet behind my head so I cant hear how beautiful my straight pipes sound from all the way up front. The truck has no catalytic convertors from the factory- I guess it counted as being a heavy duty truck and was exempt from certain emissions laws?

Anyways my question is this.... Anyone other than me ever heard of a fan clutch breaking the water pump and timing cover? I know a lot of mechanics and no one believes me. In my dirt track racing days ive seen plenty of fans come loose and hit the radiator but not the water pump and timing cover.Fan clutch blowed up?I've never heard of it happening but when something is spinning over 1000 RPMs, anything can happen when something breaks loose.

I knew a guy got killed from a grinding wheel coming apart because he was grinding on the flat side of it. A piece went through his forehead.

Like I said, RPMs and breaking apart cause weird things to happen.Fan clutch blowed up?Never heard of it.

Most fan clutches are an oil chamber, and almost can't cause a problem. The worst they do is bind and stop slipping as they are supposed to. This does not sound like an oil hydrostatic clutch. I have seen clutches that were electric, but I don't see how they could blow either. I would love to see the pieces.Fan clutch blowed up?in over 49 years id have to say that is a first

Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?

I have a 1998 Camry almost 170,000 miles on it...it is used to travel back and forth to work round trip 90+ miles. It is now leaking oil badly..so badly I have to put a quart of oil in every 3 days, my driveway is stained with oil.

...I have seen oil come out of the bottom of the oil filter when I start up the engine.

...the oil change place says it is a %26quot;Valve cover gasket%26quot; leaking...

Please assist by telling me what your opinion as to what the problem may be based upon your experience. How much is it to fix a valve cover gasket.

.....also do oil additives work and are safe, the ones that supposedly stop leaks. Thank you for your help.

...note the oil change place says that oil is not coming out of the bottom of the oil filer,...however I seen it for myself, but there was also oil coming out of the back of the engine too supposedly where the gasket valve cover was...Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?the valve covers leaking could be it, the blow by of the oil could end up anywhere.

Fix the gasket yourself, less than $20, take it somewhere, probably $125.00 on up.Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?Replace the filter and eliminate that. Take it for a second opinion, sounds like they told you what is wrong but you'd rather keep spending money on oil rather than fixing what's wrong. Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?no much not a big deal there real cheap from aftermarket

you can do it yourself just get the appropriate tools its just unscrewing and disconnecting wires to make room real simple youll get dirty but save moneyPlease help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?On your way home, when the engine is at operating temperature, pull into the car wash and use the high pressure with soap. Do not spray directly at electronic or electric components, but along the valve covers, down the block, around the pan and filters as best you can. Drive it home and look for fresh oil. There are also spray cleaners that work, but cost a bit more. After washing, if the car doesn't want to restart, let it sit 5 minutes with the hood up and try again.

Bad cover gaskets can be the problem. The oil is blown to the back of the engine and runs down where it is protected from the fan blast. If this is the case, most likely the oil pan gasket is the same age. Where the oil comes from tells where the problem is, look at the source and not the drip.

Nissan Altima Repairs ... How crucial ?

I am in process of buying a 97 nissan altima , 120k , the quote is $2800. I got it checked from mechanic and he suggested following repairs.

1) Strut Assembly

2) Strut Mounts

3) Motor Mounts

4) Flat Belts

5) Valve Cover Gasket, cover, outer

6) Valve Cover Gasket, spark plug, inner

7) flat P/S flush

8) flat tranny flush

9) flat coolant flush

10) axle shaft seals

In all repairs worth 1900 $ including labour. I understand the motor mounts and struts .. but are other things required. how crucial are they. This might be a little bit silly as you havent seen the car, but still any suggestions.

The biggest cost in all is motor mounts. It costs about 900 including labour. They have never been changed in 120k. The car does vibrate a bit due to that, but if i dont change them what will be the effects ?

While driving, other then a little vibration the car drives pretty ok.

Looking forward to your help.Nissan Altima Repairs ... How crucial ?Have a good look at the previous driver, was it a kid that thought he had a hot rod? Or was it a person who never maintained it, which seems to be the case. The machanic told you only what he could see, so how do you know there isn't something about to go out inside the engine like a spun crank bearing or a cracked valve guide?

I would suggest looking for a different vehicle for the price they are asking.

Unless you are like uncle moneybags and don't mind wasting the money on labor and parts which will make the cars price up in the $5-6k range. I am sure that you can find a better value out there for your money.Nissan Altima Repairs ... How crucial ?No way it needs all that. My kid's 97 has 185K on it and hasn't needed any of that. Original axles, seals, gaskets, struts. Check the drive belts, see if it leaves much of a stain on the driveway overnight and just drive it.

And take it to a mechanic who doesn't have a drug habit to feed.Nissan Altima Repairs ... How crucial ?Do you know this mechanic? Ask another mechanic, if he says the same thing, buy a different car for $4000.00 that doesn't need all this work.

Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?

head gasket changed. only valve cover, push rods and rocker arms, and both intake and exhaust manifolds attached to head were taken off. how could that throw off my timing? or make the air fuel mixture too lean? i'm trying to understand the problem. i let car run about 5 min. without the exhaust and manifold didn't turn red. hoping it's clogged or something simple and easy to fix. i replaced the vacuum pipe from manifold to head because of cracks, holes, and leaks. is it possible that the engine got use to running at high idle due to leaks. how do i diagnose and determine my problem on my own without technology the old way. and can a catalytic converter be unclogged? if my temp guage stop working colud that be the blame for the golw? help me with this glowing manifold and pipe issue somebody please... the shop is not an option, ya heard me...Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?Didn't you ask this question earlier? Look, this is not going to be a shade tree answer off the internet fix. You are dumping raw fuel into the exhaust and most likely it has clogged your catalytic converter. But by just replacing the converter most likely it will happen again. I mean a shop with diagnostic equipment can diagnose the problem for an hours labor. I think that is your best bet instead of pulling your hair out and not accomplishing ANYTHING.Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?replace the catPipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?it would help to know the model of car, but a vacuum leak Will cause it, spray carb cleaner around the intake to find the leakPipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer.Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?yoiu may have caused an air pocket in the cooling system.... but a glowing red exhaust most likely is a plugged exhauestPipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why? What type of car and what size engine? Converter could be clogged but if it was the engine wouldn't run very long and not very well. If the mixture is off, the unburnt fuel will be burning in the exhaust causing it to glow. Is the engine skipping? How do the plugs look? If they are black, rich, if they are very white running lean.Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?Have you tried looping your heater core hose and flushing your engine ? If you have a plug somewhere, then not surprising.

You haven't said if your engine otherwise runs fine. Timing chains can jump on start up. This would affect both heads/exhaust.

Another possibility is lifters are sticking. Do you have solid or hydraulic lifters ? Have you ran the engine with your valve cover off and watched to make sure everything seems to be working fine on top ? Getting oil, lifters/rockers working normal, etc.Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?Hi!

Okay, my answers are deceptively simple, but that's the best place to start... Take off the catalytic converter, run it straight pipe, and assign two other people to help you inspect the entire line. you want to diagnose *where* the heat up starts out. Pull or swap out the parts in a systematic order as you go down the line, and see how long, or how mush stress, the engine runs before the line goes cherry. If the heat source begins in the manifold, then your repair job is to blame. If it's down the line, you're looking at a plugged line or converter. Catalytic converters can be cleaned out, but you'd have to know what you are doing to a tee, or be willing to pay for someone who does, as a damaged converter is exponentially more dangerous than a blown head. Another contender is a dud sensor, or emissions control system. Are you sure the head you replaced is a sound one? Sometimes duds come in %26quot;new%26quot; or %26quot;reconditioned%26quot; packages. Don't know if you are talking about fuel injection or a carborator system. The fuel injection cleaners that are sold over the counter are crap that does more harm than good. Ask a reputable auto shop or mechanic about who they buy their f.i. cleaners from. A blown temp gage is a bad sign, but more symptom than cause in a heat up that does not involve your coolant system. Speaking of which, I hope you are running half antifreeze and half water in the radiator, and please check to be sure... A pure water or pure antifreeze fill *will* blow the plugs on your engine block, while too little or no water/coolant will over-heat and lock up your engine. In closing, two rare but plausible sources of grief are contaminants introduced into the pistons, arms, or manifold during repairs. Be especially wary of something as simple as water in this case, as this can cause all kinds of hell , including engine over-heat or seizing. There's always some dummy who poured the wrong fluids in the wrong tubes. I've got a buddy who chronically pours engine oil in either the power steering box, the master cylinder, or a more common goof, the transmission tube. Engines hate that, and I'd like to seize his driver's license just to protect the general public from him. All of these scenarios cause engines to cherry, hope you can find the fault inexpensively.

I'm no mechanic, but the coolant flush is not necessary. You should not get the tranny flushed either, unless you notice significant problems in shifting.

I really don't know about the rest. I'd say for that year and that kind of mileage, you are probably getting a good deal buy paying $2800 for the car and getting the repairs done on top of that. Having said that, I would probably do it, but also be prepared to drive the car into the ground, because if you decide to sell it, you will not get out of it what you put into it, as far as a sale price goes.

If this is really causing you to struggle with a decision, I would not hesitate to take it somewhere else for a second (or even third) opinion. You will surely find out if you are getting scammed or not. If you happen to decide to follow through with all of the recommended repairs, it's not like you have to get everything done at once either. Nothing on that list is incredibly pressing, but I guess it's importance depends on what you intend to use the vehicle for. I have a Daihatsu Charade (aka. Subaru Justy), engine oil is leaking from many places, and I guess I need to change a lot of gaskets and O rings. I know there is a distributor O ring and I can replace that, and I know about valve (or rocker) cover gasket, I'll buy that one as well, crankshaft is not leaking, but engine is almost covered in oil and there are always drops of oil at my parking slot.

Can an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. My problem is this, In July 2007 A man in a huge truck with a trailer hinge back up out from a parking space, it I saw him and the only thing I could at the time is speed up so he would not hit the middle of my car. He ended up hitting the side bumper and ripped it off. I have A 1999 Cryshler Sebring. It truely was a hard hit. Well the man's insurance did pay to fix the bumper, but now everything keeps going wrong. I did mention it to the person at the shop where we had arranged for the repair. I asked to please give me an estimated how much it would cost to fix it. When the time came, She did not do so and when I asked the lady she gave me a look like there is really something wrong with my car. I give two guys a ride to the bus so they do not have to walk the mile or so and they can attest that my car was running smooth. So many things one after another have gone wrong. I have put over 700.00 and still more problems. So my question is what do you think my chances are If I take it to the manufactor and they will rule in my favor. The Insurance Co-ordinator says if they say it was from the accident then they will pay for it. Straight from the start right after the accident my car kept dyeing out, so I had to drive it like a standard car with my feet on the gas and brake at the same time. So in the end , last I have heard there is a short somewhere so I took it to Spitfire and place that specializes in electrical problems and he told me my computer is bad. First of all the things my battery kept dyeing out, my car would not start up in the mornings,I took it to Auto zone and my battery was fat, swollen no good. Bought a new one, then I took it to a man at midas , he said I needed a valve cover gasket and he showed me my spark plugs we filled with oil, fixed that. Now Midas ran a scan and said I had either a bad map sensor or a short. Changed the map sensor the car is still barely running, so then another place said it was a short but had it for two weeks and could not find the short . I would like to know , if the guys Insurance is still on the hook for all the problems I have had with the car since the accident. Now I give these two guys a ride from work each day and they knew there was nothing wrong with my car before the accident. What is the best thing I can do. Many thanks , SylviaCan an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?I can offer several opinions here and I hope my answer doesnt offend. I have worked with cars in some way almost all my life. I am now a claims adjuster, and can tell you based on the description of the impact you gave me, I have never of a vehicle suffering from the problems you are having to be related to that type of impact. If you had rear ended someone at high speed enough to crush the front end of your vehicle causing damages to the engine, and electrical components I could see it. But I doubt any shop out there could some how link the problems to the accident.

Right now in regards to your next step there are two senarios. If you used a shop the insurance company rec. and is part of there program, an insurance company will guar the work the shop did. If you feel these problems are related to the accident start with the adjuster and the shop to attempt to resolve the problem. They should be willing to help since you used one of their shops.

If however you used your own shop and is not part of the insurance companies preffered shop program, you are own your own with the repairs done by the shop. The insurance company cannot guar their work.

Good luckCan an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck? Its hard to prove since you have to show that it was due to the accident and nothing else. since the vehicle is eight years old they could say it had nothing to do with the accident. Also if he hit the rear bumper i doubt you have a chance... the front bumper is your best shot. Can an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck? The burden of proof is yours. You must prove beyond any doubt that the accident caused all these problems. It will help having only one trusted Mechanic to thoroughly check out your car and assess All damage. Then take this to the insurance company or if needed a lawyer. With the right documentation and a little luck you will get your car fixed properly.

Good luckCan an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck? If you signed off on the accident..your high n dry. Always get more than one estimate when dealing with these things. And never limit yourself to the place the insurance company recommends! They are not your friends! Get a free consultation from a lawyer and make sure that when he presents your requests that his fees are included. Also..lawyers in this matter often work off of commission per settlement.Be sure that is the case so that you have no money out of pocket.Have your ducks in a row when you see him..provide receipts(shows dates of repair)a list of witnesses(your friends you ride to work)and an accident report. Good luck. Can an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck? You have a nine year old vehicle that had a rear bumper damaged. This collision did NOT damage your battery, wiring, sensors, leaky valve covers or computer system. The insurance company is NOT going to pay for any of these items or tune-ups or diagnostic charges. Just suck it up and face the fact that this is normal upkeep for a car.

  • How much will it cost to replace VW passat parts?

So I sent my car to the local VW dealership for an oil change and I get a notice in the mail to replace these parts Drive Belts, Valve cover gasket and cam Adjuster seal

What is the estimated cost to replace these? BTW I don't have an issues with the car when I drive itHow much will it cost to replace VW passat parts?Depends on the year and engine in your Passat. Assuming it's a B5 1.8T, the valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seals are relatively easy and quick fixes. If drive belts refers to just the accessory (serpentine) belt, that's a relatively inexpensive repair, but if you are due for your timing belt to be replaced, which is recommended after 60,000 miles but no later than 100,000 miles, then you'll be looking at around a $1000 repair bill.

For the belts, replacement is dictated purely by mileage, ranges stated above. For the gaskets, they only need to be replaced if there is noticeable seepage coming from where the valve cover meets the head. You can check this by opening the hood, removing the decorative plastic engine cover, and examining this area, paying close attention to the side of the engine closest to the firewall (where the cam chain pensioner resides).

My timing cover is leaking ALOT of oil. How much does that cost to fix?

My car has been leaking tremendous amounts of oil lately and I took it to the Auto Check place to get an oil change and a lookover. The guy tells me that the valve cover gasket and the timing cover are the problems. The timing cover is the worst. There is oil all over the place. The car is a 1997 240SX SE. They told me that it would be a 16 hour job and gave me an estimate of 155 for the valve cover gasket and 1,575 for the timing cover to be replaced. That's crazy! Am I being taken advantage of? I don't know much about cars but someone told me that was way overpriced and i'm a unknowledgable girl about engine work. I thought maybe it was because of my type of car (they stopped making them in 98). How much do these jobs normally cost and am I being screwed over? I'm new to the city and have no clue on what mechanic is good or bad. Is there a auto mechanic franchise out there that anyone would suggest for being less pricey and good? My timing cover is leaking ALOT of oil. How much does that cost to fix?You can find a recommended garage in your area at the Click and Clack Car Talk website.

As far as the timing cover, front wheel drive cars with the sideways engine require a lot of labor to get to the timing cover, a whole lot of parts have to be removed from the motor - and all of that done in a confined area. So if your car is front wheel drive, the job is going to be pricey.

EDIT: As long as they are doing all the labor of getting to the timing cover and gasket, it's worth it to have the timing chain/belt replaced at the same time, especially considering that the car is a '97 and the part is 11 years old. They will probably recommend replacing the water pump for the same reasons. My timing cover is leaking ALOT of oil. 1985 vw golf diesel-- no reverse !!?

I just bought a 1985 vw golf diesel and the shifting was really sloppy. In order to get into first you kind of had to get into reverse and then pop it up and to the right. I decided to fix this by purchasing a shifter bushing kit and replacing the bushing in the linkage my self. The bushings were all toast. I replaced them and now cannot shift into reverse. If i have someone try to sit in the car and shift into reverse while I pull on the gear selector toward reverse it goes in. There is a rod with two ball joints on each end (the rear selector rod) that isn't moving horizontally enough to allow the car to shift into reverse. could it be that I don't have the something aligned right? maybe the housing that holds the ball ( size of a golf ball that is attached to a lever off the main shifter rod)... help I'm completely lost! Also, does anyone have suggestions on how to change a valve cover gasket successfully?? I appreciate any help!1985 vw golf diesel-- no reverse !!?there is a linkage adjustment to be preformed after bushing replacement loosen the clamp on the shift rod and move it around until

a 1/8 inch drill bit will fit all the way through the adjustment hole then tighten the clamp this should fix your problem.

note shortly after bushing replacement a readjustment may be necessary as the bushings wear in.[generally 2 or 3 weeks of use ]then no more troubles.

tip diesel engine mount failures are common[timing belt end of engine] so are transmission mounts. if these are sagging, rotted,or broken

proper shifter adjustment will be impossible.

good luck1985 vw golf diesel-- no reverse !!?I don't know Golfs specifically, but I think the reverse selector rod isn't adjusted correctly. I don't know if the rod has adjustment, but as you say, the rear selector rod isn't moving enough to allow it to shift into reverse. What you could do is to disconnect the rear selector rod and see where the lever has to be to allow reverse to be selected and adjust the rod to suit.

As I said, I don't know Golfs, but to change a valve cover gasket involves removing any equipment covering the valve cover, remove the screws holding the valve cover to the head, then pull the old gasket away from the cover.

Place the new gasket in position on the cover. You may have to insert the gasket into a groove in the cover and into the camshaft groove. Smear a little oil on the exposed face of the gasket. Place the valve cover in place on the head and screw it down and replace any equipment removed.

What do I do about the knocking noise from my '89 Nissan 240SX?

My car continuely overheats before where the needle will shoot up over H. To fix the problem, I flushed out the radiator and put a whole new batch of coolant. I also changed the thermastat and the valve cover gasket. The car continues to overheat but not as badly as before. With one problem, somewhat solved, there is a horrible knocking noise coming from the motor. When I start the car, the knocking noise becomes very loud no matter how much I rev the car. Most of the time when I accelerate, the knocking noise will go away until the next time I shut off my car and restart it again. I am not sure if I should get a motor or not. Could the overheating have something to do with it? What can I do to fix it without selling it? Yes, this car is very important to me.What do I do about the knocking noise from my '89 Nissan 240SX?Assuming it's the original motor, it's 17 years old and has probably just about worn out. You can do repairs piecemeal but when you fix one thing another will go and it will drive you nuts and cost a bundle. The best way is to get an exchange Long Motor fitted. This is a complete motor minus all the bolt-on bits like the manifolds, carbs, starter, alternator, etc. A good engine exchange place can do the job in one day, and you will have a new motor (fully tuned up), with a warranty (of at least 50,000 miles usually), and no worries. That's the best way to go. And the place will keep your old motor as part of the deal and send it off for reconditioning for the next customer's car.

That's much cheaper and faster than getting your own motor rebuilt. Most places will also arrange finance if you need it.

At the same time, get the brakes and suspension checked over and the cooling system as well. They can do exchange radiators, too -- with full warranty. MUCH cheaper than buying a new one from a dealer! And if anything needs fixing, get it all done at the same time. One bill is better than twenty, right? And less headaches -- which you do not need in winter.

Check around for 'exchange engine' places in your area and get a few quotes. And make sure you ask for a LONG (ie complete) motor, not a short motor which is only the block and what it contains. Your cylinder head will be pretty much shot by now so go for the long motor and save yourself some grief!

    Good luck,

LenkyWhat do I do about the knocking noise from my '89 Nissan 240SX?Sounds like a bad connecting rod, bad piston, a blown head gasket, or even a bad valve. It all depends on what you would like to do with that motor. What might of happened is that the engine was running so hot that the internal engine parts have expanded past their allowed clearances (warping of internal engine parts). And to explain the fade away of the knock as the car warms up, the clearnaces comeback to normal as the metal expands inside the engine. I would recommend replacing the engine with a rebuilt or send your engine out for an overhaul. What do I do about the knocking noise from my '89 Nissan 240SX?Could be your shaft. If that you will a new engine

  • I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?

The 87 Ford F150 is a 2WD 4.9L in-line 6 manuel trans with dual tank. I changed the oil and oil filter, replaced the wiper motor with used part (mine was slow and stopping), new wipers, replaced the power booster with used part (mine had vacuum leak)(also this one is a little bigger then old one was), replaced bad seal in RR axle and added new gear oil, replaced 90% of brake lines because of rusty and broke when bleeding brakes (all clean brake Fluid now in lines), replaced center drag link (mine was egged and loose steering), replaced seals in steering for leaking, and added clamps to leaf springs (old ones broke or missing). I am not sure what else is need to do a tune up. I see and know of new spark plug wires and dis. cap. New starter and starter solenoid. The truck is running rich with black spitting out exhaust pipe. Have to change the valve cover gasket because of leaking oil as well as oil pan gasket. For oil pan gasket can i use the liquid gasket on it or buy a gasket? Please help me with my truck. How do i test the EGR valve also? Thank you!!I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?try to check it out first on auto repair shop..I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?I think you may have spent more than the truck is worth, but I think I can help with the brake light problem.

The switch for the brake light is inside near the top of the pedal. As the pedal is mashed, the switch contact makes and the lights come on. there is normally an adjusting nut to set the plunger closer to the pedal in full released position. you need to adjust so that there is about the double distance of a matchbook cover between the plunger and the pedal. This should allow the lights to come on as soon as any pressure is placed on the pedal.I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?sounds like a vaccuum leak causing the richness and that produces the black smoke. check power booster for leaks or disconnected line.

have someone press brakes while you listen near booster for sounds of air leak. if no check other vaccuum lines by carefully spraying carb cleaner on all lines and if you hear a change in engine idle while doing this then the leak is in that area.

    also adjust brake light switch.

    1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem?

I just recently had a problem with this motor and it was burning extremely rich due to a misfire. I know because the gas gauge was going down rapidly and I fixed the problem with new wires, distrubtor cap, rotor, and spark plugs. Now I noticed that the old spark plugs had oil on them and then when I put the new ones in the engine started right up the smoke went away and the gas was being sipped on. Now I noticed oil leaking out of the valve cover gasket and I'm assuming that if I change the valve cover gasket this could solve the problem. (It did on my beamer) I was also told it could be the rings and that I would need a rebuild. I don't have much money and this is my only car now so I have to do all the work myself. So could it just be the valve cover gasket and if not how do I tell what it is? Oh and is it a good or bad idea to soak the plugs in gasoline to clean them?1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem?if the oil is just on the plug threads then it,s the valve pan gasket leaking. if your saying the oil is on the firing tips then it,s probably oil rings or valve seals. try changing the oil and put a can of ( restore) in the oil. that stuff fills in tiny scratches in the cylinder walls and helps with oil consumption. i used it before and it helps to pick up the power too. i,am just trying to save you some money here.1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem? You will be fine to just replace the valve cover gasket, Datsuns were hard on them for some reason. You cannot clean a spark plug with gas, you need a special sand blaster tool; it's kind of silly to do tho, just put in new ones.1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem?Do a compression check before you do any work on the engine, it will tell you a lot.

Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?

Ok here are all the details to this thing going on with my car. First so everyone knows, it is a Chevy Lumina z34 1993 with a dual cam overhead v6 in it, 3.4L. Ok now second we have replaced the air filter, air breather, fuel filter, and have checked all the fuel lines, poured fuel injector cleaner in the car and cleaned battery wires, changed the spark plugs and changed valve cover gasket (different problem, there was oil on the spark plugs for a while so ya hehe). The problem with my car is that it starts decent in the morning when i have let it sit overnight, and also starts good if you start it up right after you shut it off, but if you let it sit for like 2 hours or so then you have to give it gas to help it start (feather the pedal). So everyone knows also, the temperature gauge (inside the car) slowly gets over half (has gotten really hot, up to 260 degrees actually, and i thought it was the thermostat but i don't think this will affect how the car starts will it?) Anyways, then drops back down to a quarter, then slowly rises again and repeats, it doesn't seem normal but idk. Another thing is i filled the car with gas (completely full) and the gas tank leaked about half a gallon of gas and then stopped. (The leak came from underneath the car in the middle, where the gas tank is). Any ideas on what is wrong with it yet? Anybody? If you have anymore questions about info of what I have done with the car, noises it makes or anything like that, just type it up here on the page and I will answer back within a couple hours. TY, please everyone help! So in need of help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?Well to start your seals are leaking. That is how oil got on your spark plugs. If oil is leaking then you probably have low oil. That can be very bad. You must check your oil every time you get gas. You have been lucky up to this point. If you run the oil reservoir too low you will seize the engine, it will freeze and will not work. You either get a new engine or new car. It is worth the two minutes to check the oil.

Second it sounds like your water or antifreeze is low too. I know everybody is in a hurry these days but you need to take care of the vehicle that takes care of you and keeps you protected.

Terrible things can happen to you from sheer laziness.

Picture breaking down in the wrong part of town all alone in the dark. You will wish you took the time.

Start caring better for your car it will run for more years to come. Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?you say it,s hard to start after it warms up? this is just a guess but have the coil tested. if a coil gets too hot then it can break down and hard to start. you say the tank leaks? maybe it,s sucking air from the leak. Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?if a car gets too hot it is harder to start until it cools alittle bit then should start fine. you do need to find out where the gas leak is and repair it im sure its not helping the situation at all.

Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?

I know the basics, can change my own oil, changed a water pump, starter, battery, etc...but now I want to restore my 1972 ford F100 and I dont know really where to start. The truck runs good EXCEPT for the following: the carberator needs to be changed, valve cover gaskets and possibly some on the engine block need to be changed as they look like they are disinigrating and half rotted away. I might at some point want to change the engine completely putting in a 351 cleveland. I also might want to add to the rear end speed so it is faster in general ( I dont even know if I said that right) so forgive me if I sound totally green here. Basically I am approaching 40, getting divorced and need a hobby. I have always wanted to restore an old vehicle so I am going to dive into this completely, just dont know where to start. Any help would be very appriciated, thanks!Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars? You can start in learn how to tune the carb. ie set idle, idle fuel mixture, choke. Maybe learn to rebuild one. Check your local library for the automotive books.

Next learn the distributor and timing. Actually if you can get rid off the points/condenser and change to electronic that would be the best thing to do. Never to have to deal with it again. Save money too, bc no need to buy a dwell meter or timing light(well rarely needed).

Working on cars/truck is all about the tools. Don't have the right tools, can't work on it.Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?Go down to a quality book store and grab some books and glance through them all and gain a little info at a time. Sounds boring. I thought it would be, but I actually enjoyed sitting down and learning about what I truly enjoy. Also, I'm 17, so if that doesn't say anything, then I don't know what will, hahaWhats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?Start the way of thinking : vintage, modern car, it's all same how to work. The different is technology, more brain and mental is work then computer, fragile and or rare parts. The rest is same, to get trouble shooting is same, only part place and how to do it is the different. Unless you try to build vintage, meanwhile your days work is starfleet officer, it's all totally different. Start read book of Haynes or Chilton, read magazine, and article is a good start. Even better if you can make relation to mechanic or society.

  • How to clean engine on 95 mitsubishi galant?

i recently changed the valve cover gasket on my car since it leaked oil thru there and made a big mess of my engine... its now covered in oil all the way down.... does anyone know how i can clean the engine thoroughly??? what should i cover on that particular car?? what steps should i take??? etc etc... thanksHow to clean engine on 95 mitsubishi galant?take it to a detail shop and let them clean the engine as they know what to cover up and how to clean it.How to clean engine on 95 mitsubishi galant? If your electrical commections are in good shape, you only need to watch the main fuse box under the hood, and the engine control module. Get a good engine cleaner from the parts store, put it on and let it soak. Use a brush to scub the engine and then hose it off. You can use a little pressure if you have a pressure washer, but be careful. MOst do it yourself car washes have a lower pressure cleaner setting for engines. How to clean engine on 95 mitsubishi galant?Any commercial spray on degreaser will work. You really do not have to worry about covering anything on modern engines. Covering used to be an issue because wather could enter and foul distributor caps.

Soak the engine down and let it set for a few minutes before spraying it off. One thing to remember is that if you do this in your drive way you will stain it wilth the gunk. Commercial car washes have oil/water separators which capture the waste which is then disposed of in an environmentally sfe manner so I suggest doing the whole operation at your local self serve car wash. Also the high pressure water will make everything look like new.

Good LuckHow to clean engine on 95 mitsubishi galant?if you DIY, you can use Aquaklean from kbs coatings.

Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?

    i have a 1989 olds.cutlessciera 4d cruiser.2.8 v6.

fel-pro#vs 50085r is the gasket #on the box i got from the zone.i have only one pan and two gaskets in the box.am i suppose to have 2 gaskets for one valve pan?and also if i drop the transpan to change the filter how much transmission fluid should i have to replace?Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?If the transmission gasket is too big they gave you the wrong gasket for your car, take it back and have them recheck the # as the gasket should fit the pan exactly and all the holes line up, I don't know why you got 2 gaskets for a transmission pan when you only need one. When you drop the pan if you buy 6 qts you should have enough with some to spare, just keep checking the stick after you get 4 qts in it and start the car and let it warm up and shift the car through the gears a few times while sitting and keep rechecking the level until you get it filled.Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?Yeah its fine to have a little bigger as long as you matched the gasket up with all the bolt holes your fine. But they are usually a little bigger.Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?On a v6 engine, you should have two valve cover gaskets.

The oil pan gasket would be larger, it would get installed on the bottom of the engine. If you drop the transmission pan and drain the torque converter (if accessible) I would fire the car back up on 5-6 quarts of fluid. Then add fluid until full by checking the dipstick.Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?I think you have the wrong parts, likely because of your terminology. Valve cover gaskets, on a V6, would come in pairs. A pan gasket, properly called an oil pan gasket, goes on the oil pan on the bottom of the engine. As you have a transversely mounted engine, the transaxle (transmission) pan is also under the engine bay, but on the transaxle instead of on the engine.

Sounds to me like you are trying to change the transmission fluid. You need a transaxle pan gasket, transaxle filter, and likely about three quarts of transmission fluid.

    How much is a valve adjustment on 95 toyota 4-runner V-6 (3.0L)?

ive never adjusted the valves on my 4-runner and ive got 170k miles. i heard that this engine uses shims to adjust the valves. also my valve cover gasket is leaking on the left bank and i was wondering how hard it is to change the valve cover gasket. just looking at it looks like a difficult job.How much is a valve adjustment on 95 toyota 4-runner V-6 (3.0L)?with the placement of the engind it is a difficult job, you most likely want a mechanic to do it as its very complicated and its really hard to get that cover right so it doesn't leak
